Deer Isle, Maine has been the home of Haskells for more than 242 years. Descendents of these early Deer Isle settlers have scattered throughout Maine and the world. Today there are about 5,000 Haskells living in Maine. In September 2008 the Island becomes a pilgrimage to “ back home”.
While the reunion invitation emphasizes Deer Isle the Island is home to two towns - Deer Isle and Stonington - and several small villages. The Island is separated from the mainland by a bridge and causeway. It lies in Penobscot Bay.
The first people to live on Deer Isle were American Indians as early as 6,100 years ago. This was about 6,000 years after the glacier covering this part of the world receded leaving behind a coastline dotted with islands and bays that make Maine a tourist mecca .
English speaking colonists settled on the island about 1760, having moved up from mainly Massachusetts. Haskells were among these founders. Haskells were skilled seafarers, developers of commerce, farmers, and community leaders. The Haskell Mills built in the 1770’s used the tide flow at the Haskell Mill Dam to power a grist mill and saw mill. The Pilgrim’s Inn, known in the past as the Ark, was built by Ignatius Haskell. He also built a tannery which was torn down in the 1930’s. There are many other buildings and places that have a Haskell history.
As you travel to the reunion, and we suggest afterward, take note of the Haskell name associated with businesses, streets, and other places. For example there is the Haskell Cemetery at China, Maine.
During the reunion you will have the pleasure of meeting and talking with Haskell “cousins” from afar. You will hear talks about ancestors. There will be a trip to Acadia National Park - a nature wonderland. You will see the Haskell collection at the Deer Isle - Stonington Historical Society as well as craft demonstrations. And you will participate in a “Down East” clambake tradition.
